A child has to remember the right words, put them in the correct order, pronounce them and respond quickly enough to keep a conversation going.
Understanding, by contrast, can be supported by context, gestures, facial expressions, pictures and familiar routines. This means a child may know much more English than they are ready to say aloud.

Personality also matters. Some children experiment with new words immediately, while others prefer to listen and observe until they feel confident. Neither approach automatically means that learning is going badly.

Why silence can still be part of learning.

Children often need repeated exposure before they begin using new language independently. They may hear the same expression in a story, recognise it later in a song and understand it during a game before eventually deciding to use it themselves.
The fact that a child does not speak much does not mean that nothing is being learnt.

Confidence has an important role too. Some children worry about making mistakes or simply dislike being the centre of attention. Putting pressure on them to answer, translate or “show what they know” can make speaking feel more difficult.
A calmer approach is usually more helpful: give them time, accept short answers and respond positively when they make an attempt.

At home, parents can create simple opportunities to use English without turning them into tests.
Songs, picture books, cartoons, games and familiar phrases can all provide useful repetition. Even answering with one word, joining in with part of a song or repeating a favourite expression can be a meaningful step towards more spontaneous speaking.

How Pingu’s English encourages children to communicate.

At Pingu’s English, the Early Learners programme for children aged three to eight is designed around the idea that language should be experienced in a natural and engaging way.
Lessons include stories, songs, games, movement, drawing, creative activities and interaction with the teacher and other children.
This variety gives learners different ways to understand and use English.

The Pingu’s English method also uses spiral learning. Words and language structures return in different situations, allowing children to recognise them, strengthen their understanding and gradually use them with greater independence.
Communication focuses on phrases rather than simply learning isolated vocabulary, while listening, speaking, reading and writing are developed progressively.

This approach means that children are not expected to produce everything immediately. They can listen, observe, associate meaning with actions and situations, and take part more actively as their confidence grows.
Speaking is therefore part of a gradual process rather than a performance that has to happen on demand.

When should parents look more closely?

If your child understands English, enjoys lessons and is gradually beginning to participate, there is usually no reason to focus too heavily on how much they speak at a particular moment.
Progress can appear in small ways: following an instruction without translation, recognising a phrase, responding with a gesture or using a few English words spontaneously at home.

It is worth looking more closely if concerns are not limited to English.
If a child also has persistent difficulties understanding or expressing themselves in their first language, or communication seems difficult across different situations, parents can discuss this with their paediatrician or a qualified speech and language professional.

For most young learners, however, the best support is patience.
Understanding is already an important sign that learning is taking place. With regular exposure, positive experiences and enough time to feel secure, many children gradually find the confidence to turn the English they understand into English they are ready to speak.

Understanding comes before confident speaking.
